We are pleased to announce a new milestone in our commitment to sustainability: continuing our journey to offset our forest footprint with PrintReleaf, Eurolabel has recently chosen to support a reforestation project in Tanzania. This step marks a further contribution to sustainable development and the fight against climate change.
The Reforestation Project in Tanzania
Climate change is a significant concern in Tanzania: the glacier on Mount Kilimanjaro has been slowly melting for decades, and the dry climate causes much of the melted ice to evaporate into the atmosphere.
The streams and rivers from Kilimanjaro and the nearby South Pare Mountains flow into the Pangani River, which empties into the Indian Ocean. According to the IUCN, about three million people rely on the Pangani River basin for their livelihood, primarily through agriculture and fishing; these means of subsistence are at risk due to environmental damage and climate change.
In Tanzania, women and children are among the poorest: nearly all women earn their income through agriculture but lack the same access to training and resources as men, resulting in 20-30% less food production.
The Importance of the Pangani River Basin
The Pangani River basin is one of the most strategic environmental locations in the world. Situated along the perimeter of the Eastern Arc Mountains, this region hosts countless species of plants, birds, reptiles, and mammals, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Additionally, millions of people depend on this land for food and income.
Thanks to sustainable farming training, farmers in the Pangani River basin are doubling their output and restoring this ecosystem by planting thousands of trees each year.
This project not only improves food security but also promotes care for the environment and community.
