When talking about inclusion in the packaging world, one of the first technologies which comes to mind is Braille, writing which allows people with visual impairments to recognise and identify products.
We know that in some sectors, such as pharma, it is mandatory to use Braille to provide some key information to consumers. The label we have created incorporates tactile elements and thermochromic ink to make packaging of injectable pharmaceuticals highly inclusive and suitable for all.
Application of Thermochromic Ink
The pharmaceutical for which Eurolabel developed the label must be stored in a refrigerator and can be administered only once it has reached ambient temperature. Administering the drug at an unsuitable temperature, as well as incorrect storage, makes it ineffective.
It was therefore essential to identify a clear and effective manner to communicate to the consumer whether the product has been stored correctly and is ready to be taken.
The label bears a snowflake icon in a thermochromic ink which is dark blue when the drug is at correct storage temperature. The snowflake disappears once the product is at the correct temperature to be administered.
This label provides effective assistance for everyone, but in particular people affected by CIPA, a condition which prevents sufferers from feeling hot or cold.
Tactile Elements for an Anti-Slip Effect
Self injecting pharmaceuticals can be a complex action which generates anxiety and agitation. It is therefore important for the consumer to be facilitated and reassured by a firm grip on the injector.
The label we developed involves the creation of a texture through the use of tactile elements. The thickness of these elements provides the injector with an anti-slip effect which aids grip.
The possibilities for customising textures which can be created through the use of tactile elements are unlimited. This allows textures to be created to match the brand or product.
The texture applied to this label facilitates administration of the pharmaceutical for all, and in particular those with difficulty in gripping and manipulating objects.

The combination of expertise and technology in labelling has allowed the creation of packaging which, in addition to being inclusive and accessible to persons with specific disabilities, simplifies use for all consumers.
